Early neurological rehabilitation

Special interdisciplinary therapies

Our department for early neurological rehabilitation accepts patients with most severe disorders of cerebral function, i.e. patients with severely impaired cognitive functions. These patients can breathe without mechanical support but require extensive monitoring and special therapies using interdisciplinary and multi-professional approaches.

Objective:

Unlike conventional intensive care, which aims at the clinical stabilisation of the patient and diagnostic validation, early rehabilitation of patients with severe disorders focuses on the earliest possible active and multi-professional support of the recovery process.

Interdisciplinary therapy teams

The patient in early neurological rehabilitation is treated by a multi- and interdisciplinary therapy team. Specialised physicians, nursing staff, therapists using different approaches (ergotherapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, swallowing therapy, psychological therapy) as well as social workers and pastors all work together to offer the patient and his or her family best possible medical, physical and psychological care. Close and flexible cooperation by the different therapy departments and the integration of the nursing team ensure that the patients receive not only optimum care but that they can benefit from a varied and motivating therapy programme. This is based on state of the art neuroscience research and knowledge and is tailored towards to the patient’s individual needs.

Upon request, family members receive special medical and psychological information, and if they wish to do so they are welcome to participate in the patient’s rehabilitation programme.

Disorders of consciousness:

The vegetative state (VS) is a condition in which a patient after severe brain injury with coma seems to be awake but has no sense of awareness that means the patient cannot establish a conscious contact with his or her surroundings.

The minimally conscious state (MCS) is a condition of severely altered consciousness in which minimal but definite behavioural evidence of self or environmental awareness is demonstrated.

Multi-professional therapy:

  • Basal stimulation
  • Upright positioning
  • Proprioceptive stimulation, mostly early stimulation of complex motor functions if needed supported by mechanical aids
  • Oro-facial stimulation and cannula removal management
  • Multimodal stimulation
  • Cannula management and weaning
