Vegetative state (VS) is a condition in which a patient after severe brain injury with coma seems to be awake but has no sense of awareness; i.e. the patient cannot establish a conscious contact with his or her surroundings.
Minimally conscious state (MCS) is a condition of severely altered consciousness in which minimal but definite behavioural evidence of self or environmental awareness is demonstrated.
