Research & Development

While building upon well established procedures, medical care is also a process of constant development. Obviously, we focus on evidence-based therapies, i.e. therapies with proven effectiveness.

Unfortunately, however, particularly in rehabilitation care there is a major gap: On the one hand there are methods which seem so evidently “effective” that no one has ever bothered to validate their effectiveness, while on the other hand there are methods which do work although they were long derided.

This situation poses a challenge for physicians and therapists alike. We are currently conducting scientific research in our hospital which focuses on motor, speech therapy and neuropsychological issues. We aim to evaluate certain therapy approaches such as forced-use, equipment-supported gait training and robot-assisted hand training in the field of motor movement, a special dysarthry feedback procedure in speech therapy and a particular approach to neglect training in neuropsychology.

We continuously design new studies to evaluate therapies in order to be able to use newest insights of experimental neurobiology to the benefit of our patients.

We conduct research studies in cooperation with the Heinrich-Heine University of Düsseldorf and with many other hospitals and institutes throughout Europe and worldwide.

We not only apply clinical parameters but also use examinations based on cortical magnetic stimulation (motor evoked potential – MEP) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Thus we can perform structural as well as functional MRI with one of the most modern MRI scanners in the region right on site. The imaging results are compared to the patient’s skills before and after the therapy, helping us to better understand the mechanisms and effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.

A further focus of our research & development activities is the efficient and patient-oriented implementation of new insights in our hospitals (also called delivery of care research). This involves for example the preparation of guidelines for motor rehabilitation of stroke patients. These guidelines, to be published by the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Neurologische Rehabilitation (German Society for Neurological Rehabilitation) are designed to provide top-quality harmonized therapy in Germany and throughout Europe.
