Fostering and training independence
Fostering and training independence
Our training and exercises focus on the activities of daily living. In order for the patient to be able to achieve the highest possible degree of independence – and thus enjoy increased quality of life – we create the necessary preconditions and environments. If the patient’s mobility is impaired by pain or edema we offer physical therapy such as manual lymph drainage, thermo stimulation or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). In sports therapy groups, for example, the patient can train muscle strength, balance and coordination.
A step ahead of the fall
Fall prevention at St. Mauritius Therapieklinik
Statistically speaking every third person over 65 years of age and every second person over 80 years falls once every year. 60 percent of the falls occur at home. Situations that require attention to different things at the same time are particularly dangerous – for example balancing a cup of hot tea through a narrow passage.
In older people different factors can lead to a fall. On the one hand, there are internal factors such as physiological changes associated with old age, health disorders, medication or cognitive disorders. On the other hand there are external factors such as a dangerous environments, defective aids or inadequate shoes.
Rarely it is only one of these factors that cause a fall – in most cases several factors coincide.
One out of twenty falls results in a bone fracture. In plain numbers that means approx. 100,000 older patients with hip fractures per year - in Germany alone. About fifty percent of these older hip fracture patients do not regain their previous mobility and thus have to deal with severe limitations in their activities of daily living and their quality of life.
Research confirmed that multi-factor fall prevention programmes can reduce the risk of falling (compared to a control group) by up to forty percent; particularly muscle strength and balance training contribute to this positive outcome (Cochrane review 2004).
