Cognitive and emotional disorders

Comprehensive diagnostics and treatment

Cognitive and emotional disorders are frequently consequences of diseases or injuries of the nervous system. Such disorders may appear as impairment of attention or memory, of planning or organizing activities or as visual or spatial impairment.

Behavioural or personality changes may also occur in the context of a neurological disorder; and they can deeply affect the patient’s school or work life. The team at St. Mauritius Therapieklinik is equipped to treat the entire range of neuropsychological impairments. Specific diagnostic procedures and therapies are available for the patients of all three clinics - Neurology, Geriatrics and Paediatric neurology.

Focus of the neuropsychology department

With regard to neurology and geriatrics, the neuropsychological team focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of attention and memory disorders, hemi-neglect, cognitive-motor disorders (apraxia) and central visual impairments. For diagnostic purposes the team can perform all standard tests as well as computed perimetry. We also offer fitness to drive tests, including practical driving sessions supervised by a driving instructor.

Specific neuropsychological procedures

The hospital team applies specific neuropsychological therapies. Saccade and exploration training is an effective method to treat scotoma and neglect. Using a monitor, the patients systematically train eye movement and search strategies in order to improve the perception of stimuli in the affected area of the field of vision resp. attention. These strategies can also help to compensate reading impairments caused by scotoma.

Therapy options for neglect are inter alia transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and optokinetic stimulation. In TENS, the neck muscles of the neglected side of the body are stimulated with weak electric current. Optokinetic stimulation means that the patient follows light stimuli from the unimpaired to the impaired side of the body, thus increasing the attention accorded to stimuli on the impaired side.

Attention, memory and planning disorders are treated either in specific groups or in individual computer-aided training programmes. The latter are designed for patients suffering from neurological disorders and take into account the users’ potential physical impairment. They allow adaptation to the patient’s individual status and thus ensure continuous and controlled performance improvement.

Moreover, our service offering includes relaxation techniques (autogenic training, progressive muscle relaxation) and social skills training. The therapies are conducted in both groups and individual sessions. The group sessions offer the patients a forum to exchange experiences – positive and negative – and to develop joint solutions. In addition to the different forms of training both patients and their families are offered consulting services for example with regard to occupational issues or coping strategies.

In geriatrics neuropsychology contributes significantly to the diagnosis of cognitive impairments associated with internal diseases. A further focus is the diagnosis resp. exclusion of dementia and differentiation from other disorders such as old age depression or post-surgery delirium.

Paediatric neurology focuses on the neuro-psychologically oriented diagnosis and therapy of development, learning or behavioural disorders following childhood brain damage. We closely cooperate with the special education staff and thehospital school . In addition to the age- and disorder-based therapies we offer recommendations for the further support of the children and adolescents. The young patients also receive support to help them cope with their disease or impairment. Obviously, inclusion of the parents is an important component throughout the therapy.

The neuropsychological therapies are based as far as possible on scientifically validated and effective methods. In cooperation with Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf we evaluate and optimize therapy approaches.
