Special education

The special education team of the clinic for paediatric neurology encompasses education experts from different fields. They accompany the children and adolescents during their entire stay, and offer activities on the wards of the clinic for paediatric neurology, in the lounge areas or outside the hospital.

Objectives

The objectives of our special education programmes are development of communication and conflict resolution skills, strengthening emotional stability, self-confidence and self-reliance. We offer activities for and with the children and adolescents that are tailored to their individual development needs and appropriate for their age. In order to promote self-determination and independence in the activities of daily life we help them during meals or with tasks such as shopping. Certainly, we also leave the patients enough space to spend time on their own, to relax and to recuperate from the structured therapy programme.

Educational approach

We follow a holistic approach to care and support of the children, consequently therapists, physicians, neuropsychologists and nursing staff work hand in hand. The patients of the different age groups are supported according to their individual needs and skills. We offer a broad range of activities, e.g.:

Group activities

  • Special education group
  • Youthgroup
  • Cooking group
  • Singing group
  • Outings, e.g. to the zoo or the cinema

Open activities

  • Function and role plays
  • Board games
  • Communication and interactions games
  • Arts and crafts
  • Computer games

Services for parents

Cooperation with the parents and counselling with regard to educational issues are obviously a crucial component of our work. The therapy contents are tailored to the individual child’s needs and designed jointly with physicians and neuropsychologists.
